10 Lil’ Known Facts About MLK, Jr. Every Kid Needs To Know

We officially celebrate Martin Luther King, Jr.’s birthday on January 15th. Most children learn about his, I Have A Dream speech and that he was a champion for civil rights but what they really should know is that in all of Martin Luther King, Jr.’s greatness, he was just a normal child, just like them.

Did you know that:

Martin Luther King, Jr. was born Michael King Jr. and his father who was a pastor at Atlanta Ebenezer Baptist church traveled to Germany in 1934 and was inspired by the Protestant leader, Martin Luther and changed his name, along with his son’s name.

His childhood home was called, The Williams House after his grandfather, A.D. Williams, who was also a pastor at Ebenezer Baptist Church in Atlanta, Georgia.

Martin Luther King, Jr.’s mother, Alberta was also a reverend at the church.

He was the quarterback of the football team at Booker T. Washington High School.

Martin Luther King, Jr. was a big practical joker as a kid.

He was required to recite a Bible verse every night at dinner before eating.

Martin Luther King, Jr. graduated high school at the age of 15.

He was one of the greatest speakers of all times but he received a “C” grade in public speaking at school.

Check your money. You will begin to see Martin Luther King, Jr., on the opposite side of the United States of America five dollar bill, beginning in 2020.

Martin Luther King, Jr., is the only other American, besides President George Washington, to have his birthday observed as a national holiday.
