Attention, parents! We have some thrilling news about an incredible children’s book that your little martial artist will adore! Introducing “Young Grandmaster Choi,” a captivating story with a Black main character who’s deeply immersed in the world of martial arts.

This exciting book recently made its debut on Amazon Kindle as the #1 Children’s Manga and the #1 Martial Arts Manga in New Releases, after receiving rave reviews from school and public librarians at the 2023 American Library Association Conference & Exhibition.

“Young Grandmaster Choi” is the first installment of an action-packed four-part manga series. It follows the journey of Rayven Johnson, a six-year-old African American army brat who finds herself in South Korea after tragically losing both her parents. Adopted by her father’s best friend, Don Choi, a skilled martial artist known as a KATUSA, and his wife, Mai, a talented baker, Rayven’s life takes an adventurous turn.

At Seoul Elementary School, Rayven encounters a mean bully, but little does she know that this encounter will spark her fighting spirit, leading her to discover the art of Hapkido.

Penned by the talented and award-winning writer, Shequeta L. Smith, “Young Grandmaster Choi” boasts a Chibi-style art that adds a delightful and comical touch to the martial arts action. Published by Shero Comics, a company dedicated to bringing more Black superheroines to the worlds of comics, films, and gaming, this manga is a true gem in the world of children’s literature.

Inspired by the beloved manga “Sailor Moon,” Smith felt the urgency to introduce some Black girl magic to the widely adored world of martial arts manga.

For the past seven years, the author has been passionate about creating comic books featuring Black girls, and now, with the resounding success of “Young Grandmaster Choi,” she’s overjoyed to share this powerful character with the world, envisioning her as a “Sailor Moon for black girls.”

Excitingly, the author is embarking on a book tour this fall! She’ll be making stops at comic shops, military bases, comic conventions, public libraries, and schools, where she’ll personally introduce the book and host thrilling comic book workshops alongside manga and anime fans.

You can find “Young Grandmaster Choi” on Amazon Kindle, Kobo, and the Shero Comics website. And to get a sneak peek at the action, check out the fun book trailer they recently released: https://bit.ly/43q9GrY.
