When we started planning our trip to Dubai, transportation was one of the first conversations we had as a family. Anyone who has traveled internationally with kids knows that getting around is not just a logistics question. It shapes the entire rhythm of the trip. How easily can we get to the places we want to see? Can we move at our own pace? Will we spend more time waiting for rides than actually experiencing the destination?
After researching our options, we decided to rent a car for the week, and we booked through Octane Rent. It turned out to be one of the best decisions we made for this trip, and we want to share exactly why, because we know how many of our readers are planning their own first family trips to the UAE.

Why We Decided a Rental Car Was Right for Our Family
Dubai is a city built on distance. The attractions families want to see- Burj Khalifa, the beaches along Jumeirah, the Dubai Mall, the cultural neighborhoods near the Creek- are spread across an area that is simply too large to navigate on foot or rely entirely on ride-shares, especially with children.
The Dubai Metro is genuinely impressive, clean, modern, and air-conditioned, but it does not reach every neighborhood, and traveling with kids often means carrying beach bags, strollers, snacks, and patience levels that do not always align with public transit schedules.
Having our own car meant we set our own schedule. Nap times did not derail the day. We could leave a beach when the kids were ready, not when a driver was available. For multigenerational trips, especially, and we know many of our readers travel with grandparents, aunties, and extended family, having a vehicle that fits everyone and moves on your timeline is invaluable.
Choosing Octane Rent: What Mattered to Us
As parents, we do not make decisions about something as important as transportation lightly, especially in a country we were visiting for the first time. We looked closely at reviews, policies, and what other families had experienced before booking. A few things stood out about Octane Rent specifically:
- A 4.9-star rating from over 1,600 reviews on Google. That is the kind of consistency that tells you a company has been doing right by its customers for a long time — not just having a good week.
- No security deposit. Many rental companies in Dubai hold a significant deposit on your card for the length of your trip — sometimes thousands of dirhams. Octane Rent does not require this on any vehicle. For families managing a travel budget carefully, having that money freely available the whole trip matters.
- Everything included upfront. Insurance, delivery to our hotel, and maintenance were all part of the price we agreed to. No surprises at pickup, which is exactly what you want when you are juggling kids, jet lag, and a new country all at once.
- Family-sized vehicles available. We needed something with enough room for our family and all our luggage. Octane Rent’s fleet includes SUVs that comfortably fit everyone with space to spare.
The Booking and Pickup Process
We sent our documents, driving licenses, and passport information over WhatsApp ahead of time, and received confirmation the same day. On arrival, the vehicle was delivered directly to our hotel at the time we had arranged. It arrived clean, with a full tank, and a member of the Octane Rent team walked us through the basics: how the toll system works, where the spare key was kept, and what to do if we had any questions during our stay.
If you are planning a trip to Dubai and want to explore their fleet for yourself, you can find everything at Octane Rent. They offer a wide range of vehicles, from practical family SUVs to more premium options, all with the same no-deposit, insurance-included policy.
What Driving in Dubai Was Actually Like
We were a little nervous about driving in a new country, especially one so far from home. But Dubai’s roads quickly put a lot of those worries to rest. The roads are wide, well-maintained, and clearly signed. Many signs are in both Arabic and English, which made navigation straightforward even for first-time visitors.
Speed limits are posted in kilometers per hour and enforced by cameras, which actually made the driving experience feel calm and predictable. There were no aggressive lane changes or unpredictable traffic patterns to manage with kids in the back seat.
Dubai also uses an automatic toll system called Salik. You do not stop or pay cash. Sensors read your vehicle as you pass under toll gates, and the charges (AED 4 per gate) are added to your final invoice. It is one less thing to think about while you are focused on getting everyone where they need to go.
Where the Car Took Our Family
Having our own vehicle opened up parts of Dubai and the wider UAE that would have been much harder to reach otherwise.
Jumeirah Beach Road
Wide, scenic, and lined with some of the city’s most photographed landmarks. We made this drive several times, often early in the day before the heat set in, and the kids loved spotting the Burj Al Arab from the car.
The Dubai Mall and Downtown
Having a car meant we could time our visits around the kids’ energy levels rather than transit schedules, arriving early, taking breaks in the car’s air conditioning when needed, and leaving when we were ready rather than when a ride became available.
A Day Trip to Hatta
This was the highlight of the trip for many of us. About ninety minutes from the city, the landscape changes from skyscrapers to mountains and dam views. This is the kind of experience that simply isn’t accessible without your own transportation, and it became one of our favorite family memories of the entire trip.
Tips for Families Renting a Car in Dubai
- Book ahead during peak season (October–April): Family-sized vehicles can book up, especially around school holidays. We booked about a week in advance and had a great selection.
- Ask about car seats if needed: Confirm this at the time of booking so it is ready when your vehicle is delivered.
- Your home driving licence works: US and most international licences are valid for visitors in the UAE — no special permit required for short stays.
- Budget a little extra for tolls: The Salik system is automatic and convenient, but for a week of regular driving, expect roughly AED 100–150 in toll charges added to your invoice.
- Download offline maps each morning: Google Maps works great in Dubai, but downloading the offline map saves you from relying on hotel WiFi or expensive roaming data.
- Plan your driving around nap times: The flexibility of having your own car means you can build the day around your children’s rhythms instead of the other way around.
Our Honest Takeaway
Renting a car gave our family something that is easy to underestimate until you experience it: the freedom to move through a destination at our own pace, on our own terms, as a family. For us, that meant fewer stressful moments, more spontaneous stops, and the ability to reach places like Hatta that became some of the most meaningful parts of the trip.
Octane Rent made the logistics side of that freedom simple. The booking was easy, the vehicle was reliable and comfortable, and there were no surprises along the way, which, as any parent traveling internationally knows, is worth a great deal.
If a Dubai trip is on your family’s list, whether it is a multigenerational reunion, a milestone celebration, or simply a destination you have been wanting to explore together, we would absolutely recommend building a rental car into your plans and Octane Rent into that decision.
