Insufficient Oxygen Supply

Birth asphyxia occurs if, for some reason, the baby does not get an adequate amount of oxygen just before, during, or after delivery. The reasons for birth asphyxia include prolonged labor, placental abruption, or respiratory problems. A delay in providing oxygen to the baby could leave it permanently disabled due to damage to the brain and eyes.

Immediate medical intervention, like providing oxygen therapy, might save lives. Conditions or duration, nature, or timing of resuscitation in themselves are very decisive regarding whether or not the baby would sustain brain damage in the long term.

Delayed Resuscitation After Birth

Antenatal examination hygiene at appropriate times and intake of antibiotics ensure the prevention of infections. Physicians should be wary of appropriate screening and treatment to ensure less risk during birth.

Failure to Monitor Fetal Distress

Regular monitoring using electrosurgical systems permits doctors and nurses to obtain information on the fetus’s condition, including heart rate throughout labor. Signs of fetal distress can range from alterations in heart rate patterns, diminished fetal activity, or meconium staining of the amniotic fluid. 

Monitoring equipment must be serviced regularly, and the staff must be adequately trained to interpret and read fetal monitoring results correctly. Nonrecognition or disregard of fetal monitoring doubles the risk of brain damage alongside other serious complications like seizures, delay in the child developing particular abilities, and, in extreme instances, giving rise to permanent disability in the child.

Misuse of Birth-Assisting Tools

Doctors use forceps and vacuum extractors for the delivery of the child. The application of these implements may ease an obstructed birth, but incorrectly or injudiciously using them could result in severe birth traumas. In situations where too much force is applied or where misuse occurs, forceps can fracture skulls, cause hemorrhaging, and injure the brain, sometimes irrevocably. The gynecologist must have adequate training in their use along with precautions to avoid trivial injuries.

Excessive force can cause high-pressure forces on the child’s skull from vacuum extractors or suction cups, causing brain bleeds or permanent neurological injuries. Since the unaided delivery could produce trivial to severe injuries on the scalp, cephalohematomas, or intracranial hemorrhages, misapplication of the vacuum extractor can prove to be quite harmful in some instances.

Vacuum-assisted births, at times, result in excess pulling on the infant’s head and neck; such pulling could lead to an acute injury of the brachial plexus or the spinal cord.
