As we step into the new year, let’s take a moment to reflect on the power we hold as parents. What if your everyday choices could help build a stronger future for your children and community? Prioritizing Black-owned businesses can do just that. “Buy Black everything!” This isn’t just a catchy hashtag or a temporary trend. It’s about making deliberate decisions to support the companies that reflect our values and strengthen our communities. Let’s make #BuyBlackMovement a lifestyle—one that creates lasting impact.

This year, let’s make #BuyBlackMovement a lifestyle—one that creates lasting impact. Buy Black everything!

“Before you hit “reorder” on Amazon.com or pick up the same old brand at Walmart, ask yourself: Is there a Black-owned alternative?”

The economy is shifting, and with it comes uncertainty. For Black-owned businesses, which already face systemic challenges like limited access to funding, these changes could mean the difference between thriving and closing their doors. Here are the facts:

  • Black founders receive less than 1% of all venture capital funding in the U.S.
  • Black business owners are less likely to secure full bank loan approval, even when considered low-risk borrowers.

These disparities hold back businesses that could otherwise create jobs, build wealth, and inspire future generations. Parents, we can’t afford to leave this to chance. Supporting Black businesses means ensuring they’re around to support us—and our kids—for years to come. We are also supporting our children’s future businesses by leading the way for others to succeed.

Take a moment to think about the products your family uses every day: toothpaste, coffee, diapers, deodorant, laundry detergent. Before you hit “reorder” on Amazon.com or pick up the same old brand at Walmart, ask yourself: Is there a Black-owned alternative? A quick search on Google or a tool like ChatGPT can connect you with businesses that offer these products. Swapping just one or more household items for a Black-owned brand is a small step that makes a big difference.

Also, consider where you shop. Some major retailers have rolled back their Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion (DEI) initiatives, which aim to create fairness in hiring, promotions, and overall support for marginalized communities. Walmart, for example, has reduced its DEI commitments, while companies like Target and Costco have reaffirmed theirs. Shopping with intention shows your children the importance of standing up for your values through action.

By choosing Black-owned products online, in or near your neighborhood, you’re investing in businesses that often rely solely on community support. Your kids will see the value in these choices, too, as they learn what it means to uplift others.

“Ask yourself: What was the last thing you purchased as a family from a Black-owned business?”

Say it and mean it: “I support Black Businesses!” Saying you support Black businesses is a start, but it’s not enough. It’s like saying, “I’ll pray for you,” but never actually praying. Real support means action. Ask yourself: What was the last thing you purchased as a family from a Black-owned business? If you’re struggling to remember, now is the time to change that. Your purchases can make a real impact, helping businesses pay bills, hire employees, and innovate. This is the way we “mind our Black business,” by supporting our Black businesses! Even if it takes a little longer to receive or costs a little more, you are investing in yourself, your community, and your future.

This isn’t just for Black families, either. Black-owned businesses create high-quality, innovative products that anyone can benefit from. When allies of all races support these businesses, it normalizes the idea that diversity should be celebrated and rewarded—not just during a specific month or moment but year-round.

If we don’t support us as a community, who will? Support your local and online Black businesses. Make the effort to seek them out.

Parents, let’s show our kids the power of intentional choices. Supporting Black businesses isn’t just a moment; it’s a movement. Commit to buying Black, involve your children in the process, and share your experiences with the hashtag #BuyBlackMovement. Together, we can create an economy that uplifts our community and builds a legacy of success for generations to come.

So, what’s the first Black-owned product your family is going to try this year? Let’s make 2025 the year we turn intention into action and teach our children the importance of building a better future through everyday decisions.
