Bonding Through Fashion: Coordinated Outfits

September 11, 2024

Fashion can be a powerful connector. Whether your child is interested in fashion or not, you can use fashion to bond with them.

How? Coordinating outfits can be fun and cute but it can also be cringeworthy if not done properly. So, what are some of the ways that you can wear coordinated outfits without it being cringe-worthy?

An african american mother and son are in coordinated outfits.

Here are some of the best stylish and coordinated outfits you could try with your kid(s).

Coordinated Sets But From Different Designers

The most elegant way to wear coordinated outfits is to opt for two different coordinated sets.

Let us explain.

A single coordinated set or a co-ord set is a two-piece outfit. When purchasing a co-ord set, you will be buying a single outfit made up of two pieces.

The two pieces in a co-ord set are designed to be worn together. Co-ord sets are very popular because they are quick and usually easy to put on.

With these types of sets, you no longer have to worry about pairing a top with a skirt or some pants. The pairing has been studied and approved by the co-ord’s fashion designers.

Some parents choose to buy the same coordinate set for themselves and their children. They end up wearing the exact same outfit.

This can be a little cringe. Anyone who looks at you will be able to tell that a lot of effort has gone into this and that you purposefully want your children to look exactly like you.

A more sophisticated approach would be to buy a coordinated set for yourself from a specific brand or designer. Then, look for a coordinated set for kids from a different brand or designer.

There are many wonderful and affordable matching kids’ sets on the market.

By choosing coordinated outfits from different designers, you will be creating a more layered and complex overall look.

You will preserve your child’s individual fashion style and identity as well as your own.

Pick One Coordinated Color Or Small Accessory Instead Of A Full Outfit

Instead of coordinating a whole outfit, you can just pick one color or a small accessory to include in your outfits.

For example, you can have the color blue in your coordinated outfits. Your son could wear some blue socks or blue shorts and you could wear some blue eyeliner or a blue T-shirt.

You can also choose a small accessory instead of a color. For example, you and your daughter could both wear a scarf with your outfits to match more subtly.

You can play with so many different accessories and clothing items. Just remember that, in the fashion world, less is more.

That being said, have fun with it! If you want to go a bit over the top, go for it.

The goal is to bond and create lasting memories with your child. The most important aspect to remember is that your child needs to enjoy the process.

If not, coordinating outfits will not be a real bonding moment.

Coordinated outfits lose their cuteness as soon as strangers can tell that children have been forced into wearing something they don’t like by their parents.

Your child should feel comfortable in the outfit you choose. They should have some say in what they want to wear and be excited at the prospect of coordinating outfits with you.

You and your child need to use fashion as a tool for self-expression.

If you want to use fashion to bond with them, you need to make sure that your child’s outfit is a reflection of their true self.

Otherwise, you will be bonding with who you think they are but not who they actually are

You want to connect with the real them and not the idea you have of them.

In this article, we listed three ways in which you can bond with your child through fashion.

Our tips will help you coordinate outfits in a non-cringe way and turn this fashion moment into a lifelong memory.
