Hiking is a transformative activity that can change your life, especially if you’re an African-American mom looking to shed that post-pregnancy weight and lead a healthier lifestyle. In this article, “The Glamorous Benefits of Hiking for African-American Moms,” we’ll explore the numerous benefits of hiking, both physical and mental, tailored to the experiences of African-American moms. We’ll also discuss how you can enjoy the great outdoors safely and stylishly, even if you can’t venture into the wilderness. But before we embark on this empowering journey, we’d like to remind you: Black girls do hike!

Shedding Baby Weight with Hiking

Congratulations on the precious addition to your family! The journey of motherhood is beautiful, but it often comes with the challenge of post-pregnancy weight. Hiking can be your secret weapon to shedding those extra pounds while enjoying quality time with your little one. Here’s how:

a. Calorie Burn: Hiking at a moderate pace can help you burn around 300-500 calories per hour, depending on the terrain and your body weight. This calorie burn, combined with a healthy diet, is an effective way to lose that baby weight.

b. Low-Impact: Hiking is a gentle low-impact exercise on your joints. This is especially important for new moms, as it reduces the risk of injury and provides a safe way to rebuild your strength.

c. Bonding Time: Hiking is an excellent opportunity to bond with your baby. Invest in a quality baby carrier designed for hiking so your little one can enjoy the fresh air and beautiful scenery right alongside you.

Staying Active Indoors: Treadmills and Ellipticals

We understand that not everyone can get outside, especially when you have a little one to care for. If you prefer the gym or are looking for indoor options, treadmills and ellipticals can be your best friends.

a. Virtual Hikes: Many gyms and fitness centers offer virtual hiking experiences on their treadmills and ellipticals. These virtual hikes simulate hiking with a virtual trainer through stunning landscapes while staying indoors.

b. Convenience: The gym provides a controlled environment where you can work out safely while your baby is in a daycare facility or under the supervision of a childcare professional.

The Power of Community: Meetup Groups

Hiking is not just about exercise; it’s also an opportunity to connect with like-minded individuals. For African-American moms looking to share their hiking experiences, various Meetup groups are tailored to your needs. Here are a few suggestions:

Black Girls Do Hike

Join this empowering community of Black women who share a passion for hiking. You’ll find camaraderie, support, and inspiration from fellow moms and hikers.

Vibe Tribe Adventures

Vibe Tribe Adventures (VTA) is a Denver, Colorado-based national 501(c)(3) organization offering global outdoor recreation and adventure sports opportunities for Black, Indigenous, People of Color, and their allies. They aim to provide equitable opportunities for diverse communities to participate in outdoor recreation and inspire a healthy lifestyle. VTA envisions a world where all people can explore and enjoy the outdoors.

BlackPackers

Blackpackers was started in 2019 to address the outdoor representation gap. A single mother, Patricia struggled with the means and knowledge to take her young son on outdoor adventures. Patricia saved up money working weeks of overtime as an EMT to buy her initial set of backpacking/gear and took herself on her first overnight backpacking trip–alone and in a snowstorm. Primarily self-taught, she hopes to make it easier for families to access the outdoors by making the initial investment.

Diversity Outdoor

The Diversify Outdoors coalition comprises social media influencers, including bloggers, athletes, activists, and entrepreneurs, who collectively share a mission to promote diversity in outdoor spaces where people of color, 2SLGBTQ+, and other underrepresented identities have historically been marginalized. Their passion lies in advocating for equitable access to the outdoors, embracing body positivity, and celebrating individuals of all skill levels and abilities. In response to the growing movement for diversity in outdoor spaces, mainly driven by social media, they have united to create a platform that fosters connections, expands their community, and provides resources for those seeking information, allyship, and collaboration opportunities to pursue a more inclusive outdoors.

Black Outdoors

Black Outside, Inc. was founded with a straightforward mission: reconnecting Black/African-American youth to the outdoors. Through culturally relevant programming, inspired volunteers and staff, and passion for connecting Black youth to the powerful history of Black people outdoors, we seek to move the needle on diversity in the outdoors and ensure Black/African-American youth have safe and equitable spaces outside.
