There is a specific kind of magic that happens when you are traveling “3 generations deep.” On our recent voyage aboard the Disney Wish, that magic was palpable from the moment we stepped into the Grand Hall. I’m a Millennial Mom, navigating this world with my three Gen Alpha kids, ages 5, 7, and 9, and my GenX mother, who at 59 is the glue that keeps us all together. For my kids and me, this was our first time ever on a cruise ship. For my mom, an experienced cruiser, it was her first time on the Wish. We weren’t just taking a vacation; we were building “core memories,” much like the glowing orbs in Disney’s Inside Out.

The journey began with a mix of excitement and those inevitable first-timer jitters. I remember texting my mom from my stateroom as the ship began to slow down while pulling into port. “Why is the ship shaking?” I asked, slightly panicked. She laughed and reassured me that it was just the thrusters working their magic. That was my first lesson in cruise life: every vibration and sound is just part of the rhythm of the ocean.

Successful Black Parenting Magazine has always championed the idea that family travel is a vital part of our cultural heritage. Being on the Disney Wish allowed us to see ourselves reflected in a luxury space that was both welcoming and culturally resonant. From the 5-star bedding that felt like sleeping on a cloud to the gourmet food that rivaled any land-based fine dining, the experience was nothing short of spectacular.

As a first-time cruiser, I didn’t know what to expect. The sheer scale of the Disney Wish is enough to take your breath away — it is about the size of four football fields in length. The ship is a floating palace of high-end design and fairy-tale whimsy. However, that first night, as the engines hummed, I kept checking the Disney Cruise Line Navigator app to see where we were.

What I quickly realized is that the Disney Wish is designed for comfort and safety. Once I settled into the 5-star luxury of our stateroom, the jitters faded. The bedding is incredibly plush, and the attention to detail is evident in every corner. For Black families, feeling like you belong in a luxury space is paramount. The staff on the Wish goes above and beyond to ensure that every guest feels seen and valued.

My mom, the GenX Grandma, was our seasoned guide. She reminded us that the ship isn’t just a mode of transportation; it’s a destination in itself. Once I stopped worrying about the “how” of the ship moving, I started focusing on the “wow” of the experience. We spent some time at the adult-only pool area, a serene refuge where I could actually hear my own thoughts while the kids were busy in the Oceaneer Club.

One of the most delightful discoveries on this trip was the long-standing tradition of Disney Pin Trading. I had seen people wearing lanyards covered in colorful pins before, but I didn’t realize how addictive and social the hobby could be. The pins can get rather heavy on the lanyard, so we ended up pinning them to our bags and hats specifically to display our finds. My kids traded pins with another passenger who had been collecting them since she was a young child. This was a fantastic way for them to practice their social skills while I watched. You can also trade pins at the front desk at many Disney resorts on land. Even Grandma got in on the action.

Then there is “Pixie Dusting.” This is a beautiful, community-driven tradition where guests leave small gifts or treats for other families, usually in “Fish Extenders” (hanging pockets) outside their staterooms. I went all out decorating both of our staterooms with magnets, whiteboards, and banners. It turned our hallway into a vibrant celebration of our family’s presence on the ship. And every time we returned to our stateroom, the children found a new surprise in their pouches. They couldn’t wait to see what would be there next!

Participating in these traditions made us feel like part of a larger, global community of Disney fans. It’s these small, intentional acts of kindness and exchange that help create those “core memories” that will last a lifetime.

While the Disney Wish is a paradise for kids, it is also a haven for adults. I made it a priority to visit the ship’s gym and the Senses Spa. Getting a massage was the ultimate form of self-care. It’s important for us as parents to remember that we aren’t just there to facilitate our children’s joy; we deserve to thrive and find our own peace as well.

One of the absolute highlights of the trip was our dinner at Palo Steakhouse. This experience, hosted by Disney, was the epitome of 5-star dining. The service was impeccable, and the steak was perfectly prepared. Sitting there with my mom, away from the kids for a few hours, allowed us to connect as two Black women sharing a luxurious experience. It was a moment of pure excellence and relaxation.

This balance of family fun and adult luxury is what makes the Disney Wish a premier choice for multi-generational travel.

To make the most of your voyage, you need a few insider tips. Here are the hacks we learned that made our trip much smoother:

  • Before You Go: There is always a Facebook Page for your particular cruise date. Find it to connect with other families and to get insider tips for your particular cruise week.
  • Request Character Sheets: If you ask your stateroom host, they will replace the standard white sheets on the bunk beds with Disney character sheets. It’s a small touch that makes the kids’ bedtime feel extra special.
  • Prepare for Pirate Night: Even though it might not be heavily advertised in the pre-trip emails, Pirate Night is a massive deal on Disney cruises. Most families go all out with costumes. We were ready, but many first-timers were scrambling!
  • Utilize Free Room Service: Did you know room service is free? Use it at least once. There is something truly decadent about ordering a late-night snack or a full breakfast to enjoy on your verandah.
  • The Castaway Cay 5k Medal: If you walk or run the 5k on Disney’s private island, Castaway Cay, you can request a rubber Disney medal. The kids absolutely love these as souvenirs of their physical achievement.
  • Dining Waitstaff Assistance: Since you have the same waitstaff every night, they get to know your family’s preferences. If you ask them once to cut up your child’s food, they will remember and do it every night going forward.
  • The “Titanic Moment”: For a great photo op, head to the bow on Deck 6. It’s the perfect spot for that classic “king of the world” pose. Unfortunately, it rained during our window, but it’s a must-do for your list.
  • Bring Your Own Bubble Bath: The Disney ships have cute little bathtubs, but they don’t provide bubble bath. The shampoo provided doesn’t create the thick, fluffy bubbles kids want, so pack a small bottle of your own.
  • Disney Gift Card Strategy: If you have Disney Gift Cards, you can apply the balance to your stateroom charges or to use for tips. The pro tip here is to go to the Guest Services desk during off-peak hours, like late at night or during the main dinner shifts, to avoid long lines.

As we sailed “3 generations deep,” the theme of representation was always at the forefront. My mom grew up in an era where Cinderella was the only princess who felt like an underdog she could relate to. Today, my daughters have Princess Tiana. Seeing my oldest daughter lose her mind with joy when she met Tiana at the Royal Gathering brought my mom to tears. Tiana’s story, her Cajun roots, and her ambition resonate deeply with our family history.

Our journey on the Disney Wish was more than just a cruise; it was a testament to the strength and brilliance of our family. From the first-timer jitters to the sophisticated nights at Palo, we embraced every moment. We returned home with bags full of pins, hearts full of “core memories,” and a renewed sense of pride in our “3 generations deep” bond.

When you plan your trip, remember that the Disney Wish is designed to help you thrive. Take the time to find those moments of luxury, advocate for your children’s joy, and celebrate the beautiful representation that makes this ship so special. Your family deserves to take up space in the most magical way possible.

Is the Disney Wish good for first-time cruisers?

Absolutely! The ship is designed with a high level of guest service and luxury, making the transition to sea life very easy for first-timers. The “Disney Wish Hacks for Families” mentioned above will help you navigate the experience like a pro.

Do I need to bring cash for tips on the ship?

You can use cash, but there are Disney bands that you wear to charge everything to your card on file. If you have a Disney Gift Card, you can apply the balance of that to your account at Guest Services. You can also have tips automatically charged to your card on file.

What is the “3 Generations Deep” experience?

It refers to traveling with grandparents, parents, and children together. The Disney Wish is uniquely suited for this because it offers dedicated spaces for every age group, from the nursery to the adult-only lounges.

Is Princess Tiana always on the Disney Wish?

Princess Tiana is a major presence on the ship, especially during the Royal Gatherings. Meeting her is a highlight for many families and a significant moment of representation.

Can I use Disney Gift Bands for everything on board?

Yes, most onboard charges can be settled using your Disney bands. This includes most gift shop purchases, specialty dining, such as Palo, and spa services.
