Let’s face it: living in the modern world is tough. All the various pressures of work, family, etc., seem to constantly pull us in more directions than we can manage. Some of us get so overwhelmed that we start to spiral out of control.
But it doesn’t have to be this way. No matter how demanding your job is or how many activities your kids are involved in, there is always a way to maintain a healthy work-life balance. You just need some essential tools to do so.

What is Work-Life Balance?
As the name suggests, work-life balance involves creating a healthy mix of professional and personal activities in your life so that you don’t find yourself burned out by any one of them. This means different things for different people, but the underlying principles are the same for everyone.
Setting Priorities
If you work as a designer for magazines and don’t feel like you have enough time to devote to your family, see if there might not be ways you can make your professional life easier. Perhaps you can find a magazine mockup that will help save you time and effort. Then you can work on the things you need.
Setting priorities is a simple matter of creating categories for yourself and ensuring you devote time to each. Don’t let your family fall behind; before you know it, the kids will be grown and off to college.
Establish Boundaries
This one is tough, particularly if you have a really demanding boss or other circumstances. But at the end of the day, you should remember that it is YOUR life you are leading, not anyone else’s.
The fact is that establishing boundaries can be good for everyone in your life. People sometimes get in the habit of taking advantage of other people because they know that they can. These relationships can turn abusive and be harmful to both parties. By creating clear boundaries of what you will and will not put up with, you are both respecting yourself and forcing others to respect you more.
Be a Good Communicator
Establishing boundaries is just one part of respecting and being respected by the people around you. Learning to communicate better in general is also essential to personal and professional success.
This means several things:
- Letting people know clearly (but not angrily) when you’re not happy with their behavior. This can be difficult, especially when relationships are sensitive.
- Communicating when you are grateful and happy with situations. Whether it be in your personal life, with a service company, or at the office, people far too often don’t sufficiently express their gratitude.
- Not being shy when you feel like you have alternative ideas. Even if you are a junior person in your company, if you feel like you have an idea that can improve company operations, express it diplomatically. You will likely be praised for it.
Communicating well doesn’t mean that you have to express every thought on your mind out loud as soon as it comes to you. But determining which situations call for communication is an art that you can continue developing throughout your life.
Find Your Own Balance
Every person’s work-life balance has its own meaning. For some people, it might be essential to spend no less than two hours a day in the gym. For others, cooking special meals for health benefits might be a priority. And some people do thrive by being on the job for ten hours a day. Whatever your circumstances are, just be sure that you remain fulfilled, balanced, and have time for the things you need. Some people realize this too late.
