Do you know what is one of the most underrated advantages in life? You guessed it! Bilingualism. Speaking a second language can open a lot of doors in different places, either in education, in your career, or in the development of personal connections that allow for a better and deeper understanding of our shared world. 

A bilingual brain offers cognitive benefits like stronger memory and better problem-solving abilities, and improved academic performance. It nurtures cultural awareness, allowing people to connect with other cultures and people they might have otherwise not been able to.
And it also offers better career opportunities.

Now, all those benefits sound great, right? And they are. But why then is there a bilingualism or multilinguism gap between Black families and other families?

It is not a lack of interest or even awareness, it is often due to systemic barriers that continue to underrepresent Black students in dual-language and /or immersion programs that could offer the benefits of a bilingual education. However, when it comes to learning a second language, there are two ways to get around those barriers. 

One of them is early exposure to a second language, singing songs, watching cartoons, and reading or listening to bilingual books. A hack we like to share with parents who are serious about their kids learning a second language is getting a VPN service and a streaming device and setting both of those to a location where the target language is spoken.

Visiting language-rich areas in your city, restaurants, or spending time with a family friend who speaks a second language also counts as amazing exposure too. Listening and having fun while being exposed to the target language always helps to sense the flow, learn small phrases and words.
