Decorating any room of the house is tough, but decorating your kids can be a minefield. You want to get it right for them, but you also want to make it aesthetically pleasing and not a total train wreck. Plus, you’ve got to think of a ton of different things, depending on your child’s age, likes, interests, and of course, budget. Here, we’re going to run over a few pointers and ideas for you.

Safety First

While aesthetics are important, safety must always be a top priority in a child’s bedroom. According to the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC), furniture tip-overs are responsible for over 25,000 injuries to children annually. Securing bookshelves, dressers, and other heavy furniture to the wall with anti-tip brackets is essential. Additionally, ensure cords from blinds or curtains are out of reach, as they pose a strangulation risk. Non-toxic paints, rounded furniture edges, and flame-retardant fabrics are other key considerations that contribute to a safe, child-friendly environment. Remember, how you secure furniture will change depending on the type of furniture, weight, and the wall material you’re affixing it to – it is imperative to make sure you get this right.

Interactive Decor

Having tangible decor is impressive and means the room isn’t just pretty to look at, but fun too. Take photo books for example. So many parents will put photo books up on a shelf so that their child (so long as they’re old enough), can flick through when they feel the need. They can quickly relive fun memories, childhood moments of vacation images. They look great on a shelf and can give a bedroom a different splash of style rather than a bunch of books that are never used or touched.

Maximizing Space and Organization

Organization is another critical aspect of decorating a kid’s room, particularly when space is limited. Research by IKEA shows that parents spend an average of 15 minutes daily tidying up their child’s room, often struggling to manage clutter. Creative storage solutions, such as under-bed drawers, wall-mounted shelves, or multi-functional furniture like ottomans with hidden compartments, can help keep the space tidy while also teaching children organizational skills. Labeling storage bins or using color-coded baskets can further simplify cleanup routines, especially for younger children.

A Room That Grows with the Child

One of the biggest challenges for parents is ensuring the room can adapt as their child ages. A report by Houzz found that 60% of parents redecorate their child’s bedroom every five to seven years, often due to shifting interests or the need for more functional furniture. To reduce the frequency of costly makeovers, experts recommend choosing versatile furniture—like convertible cribs, adjustable desks, or modular storage systems—that evolves with the child. Neutral wall colors paired with themed accents such as decals, rugs, or bed linens also allow for easy updates as tastes change without requiring a full overhaul.

Nostalgia For The Win

It’s nice to remind them of achievements and things they’ve done previously. Imagine your child was part of a winning amateur softball league or team. Fun times! Hanging their custom softball jersey up on the wall is a great way of reminding them of the fun they had, and their achievements too. The same can be said of paintings, pictures, and drawings. Tapping into a child’s nostalgia is ever important and a great way to add decor and personalization to their bedroom.

To Finish

You know your kids better than anyone, but, depending on their age it’s important to incorporate some of their feedback into your design plans. If you get this right, it’ll not only look great, but they’ll love it too.
