Planning the perfect birthday party for your child can really take its toll. The pressure to throw a memorable birthday can mean that you struggle to think of ideas and struggle with your budget too. Fortunately, you’ll find plenty of helpful advice to help you throw a great kids’ birthday party thanks to these out of the box ideas.

A ‘drive-in’ movie night in your backyard

A trip to the movies is a popular birthday activity, but why not give it a little twist with a ‘drive-in’ movie night, at home instead? You can get creative by investing in a small projector and a screen to bring outdoor movies to your backyard. Get some fairy lights and use your home sound system to set the mood. Some comfy floor cushions, blankets and plenty of popcorn are all you need for a movie night with a difference that kids will love to do again and again. Why not team it up with a sleepover? If you can stand the noise until the early hours that is…

Imagery is everything. Marian Wright Edelman once said, “You can’t be what you can’t see,” so be sure to feature age-appropriate positive Black movies classics that your children will love, like these below:

Turn your home into Black Hogwarts for the day

Not too long ago, Black Twitter had fun trending with #BlackHogwarts. You can have fun with it too by incorporating some of their appropriate hilarious antics into your kids birthday party. Turn your home into a school of witchcraft and wizardry with a potions class with fun home science experiments, chocolate-wand making, fake dueling and more. You can ask that everyone comes in costume and decorate your house with inexpensive Harry Potter decorations from eBay or Amazon. Harry Potter offers some family-friendly fun for everyone and gives you the chance to get really creative with your party ideas.

One of my favorite #BlackHogwarts posts.

Bring dinosaurs to life

Kids love dinosaurs, and there are plenty of great dinosaur-themed party ideas you can use to create an epic party theme. Invest in a lifelike raptor costume for games in the backyard and have fun with dinosaur-shaped cakes, food and more. A face paint kit is an easy way to get all of the party guests involved, and you can find some incredible dinosaur makeup tutorials online via Pinterest and Instagram.  Younger children will appreciate a sandbox full of cut-outs of cardboard dinosaur bones to discover. The one with the most bones wins a prize. For party favors you can give out copies of Marvel’s, “Moon Girl and The Devil Dinosaur.” She is an African-American girl with superpowers, which brings us to our next theme.

Superheroes with a twist

While superhero parties have become very popular thanks to Marvel’s Black Panther and other movies, you can still make them unique and exciting for your child. Why not encourage everyone to create their own superhero or create their own comic book? You can bring in cartoonists to draw the kids as superheroes and other fantastic superhero party ideas to help the party go off with a bang. Check out Kiesse Kid’s superhero party favors that feature African-American children and Etsy to add a cultural flair.

If you’re bored of the usual kids’ parties then looking at others ideas can help keep things fresh – especially if there are a lot of children in your child’s class. DIY projects can be a great way to keep costs down and helps make things extra special. Take photos of your efforts and one day they can look back on all of the amazing birthdays that they had. There are tons of ways you can make your kid’s birthday party a unique experience and one to remember – you just need to think outside the box.
