As a family, be aware of warning signs to watch out for in regard to substance use:

  • Changes in friend group, academic performance, eating and sleeping patterns, and physical appearance.
  • Withdrawing from family and social life.
  • Erratic, high-risk behaviors that indicate irresponsibility or poor judgment. 
  • Presence of medicine containers or other substance paraphernalia like bottles, injections, and so on. 

Whenever you suspect your children or other family members are using substances, do not ignore your gut. Here are some steps you can take:

  • Speak to the person – do not confront them or blame them; just speak to them.
  • Be relaxed and encourage honesty, where you do not push them toward anything but remain approachable whenever they need you.
  • Put the focus on substance use, not the person. It is substance use that is the enemy.
  • Check in with your family regularly; spend time with them, ask them about their whereabouts, and be there for them.
  • Get professional help. Early intervention prevents the condition from worsening and also improves the prognosis.
