What’s on your child’s bookshelf? Black books should be a staple in every Black family’s household but quality books with Black images are often hard to find. Did you know that in 2014, 3500 childrenโs books were published and only 180 of those were about Black people? Itโs super important for young children’s self-esteem to see images like themselves in books and media. ย Tamara McNeil is on a mission to make that happen. She started a new company called, the โJust Like Me! Box,โ which is a monthly subscription box service for young children.

Thereโs a new monthly theme for every Just Like Me! Box and Julyโs box is called, โThe Black Excellence Box.โ
Each month, children can look forward to receiving their box in the mail with two to three age-appropriate books, educational activities, and swag such as a drawstring backpack with the companyโs logo on it.
The books included are often classics with African-American images like, โWhistle for Willieโ by Ezra Jack Keats and โAmazing Graceโ by Mary Hoffman.
McNeil will soon offer customers the opportunity to donate book boxes to shelters or to programs that serve children and families that faceย socio-economic challenges.
Just Like Me! Boxes require a subscription of $25 per month. For more information or to subscribe to Just Like Me! visit their website at JustLikeMe! Box. Use the coupon code below to get $5 off of your first Just Like Me! Box.
