Black and Brown children live in a world where they rarely see images that look like them, now a mom has launched a line of wall decals to change that.
Inspired by her young daughter, Pastor, mom, and founder of Tiny Tots and Tikes, Cynthia Jackson created a line of decals that reflect positive and creative Black images so that little Black girls and boys will be inspired through their walls.
Jackson began realizing the effect on her daughter’s self-image when she began the little girl began to ask, “Mommy, why don’t I have white hair and why does my skin look like this?” Well, these were questions that she was definitely not expecting to ever hear from her little daughter. She was surprised, shocked and confused. She really couldn’t understand why her little pretty Black princess was questioning the beauty of her own hair and skin.
After much thought about this surreal moment, Jackson realized that she had completely underestimated the impact on her daughter’s self-image. She also enrolled her daughter into a predominately white pre-school and Jackson was then appointed as a pastor of a predominately white church. “My daughter was receiving conflicting messages about her self image because everyone and everything around her at the time were white,” said Jackson.
As a result of her inner struggle, she threw everything into overdrive and spent much time affirming her daughter even more. “We also became intentional with purchasing toys and room decor that reflected positive and creative black images to reaffirm her beautiful blacknes,” said Jackson.
To further this effort, she and her husband began a small business and have made it their mission to produce various products that reflect positive and creative Black images so that little Black girls and boys are inspired and proud of the way they look.
