By the time your child is in third-grade it is essential they know how to read well. This is a point in a child’s life when they are no longer taught by their teachers to read but are expected to read on their own and every assignment requires reading. Not only do they need to know how to read but their reading comprehension is extremely important. Require that your child do a book report every week, especially in the summer and during the school year on the weekends. It doesn’t have to be too involved but they need to answer your questions like 1) What was the book about? 2) Who was the main character? 3) What did you like most about the book? 4) What did you like least about the book 5) Who was the author? 6) Would you recommend the book to a friend? Why or Why not? Make sure that you have read the book too so that you can develop your own questions to ensure they read the book and didn’t just answer your typical questions.
