Chrissy Teigen Gets New Moms Chatting About Postpartum Depression

May is Maternal Health Month and supermodel Chrissy Teigen is asking moms to share what they wish they would have known about postpartum depression on social media @chrissyteigen using the hashtag #MyWishForMoms. She’s launching this initiative as part of a partnership with Pittsburgh-based Allegheny Health Network (AHN) to ignite a national conversation around postpartum depression.

“I wish I had known that postpartum depression can happen to anyone because I didn’t think it could happen to me…”

One in seven new moms suffer from postpartum depression but many don’t recognize the symptoms or are afraid to come forward for help for fear of losing their children. The fear is real. One mother wanted help for her postpartum depression while at her OB/GYN appointment and instead of getting care, the nurse called the police on her. Others just don’t get the care they need. Postpartum depression is characterized by extreme feelings of sadness, anxiety, and exhaustion that can threaten the wellbeing of moms, babies and their families.

Teigen suffered from postpartum depression with her daughter and can relate to other new moms who are experiencing the same or similar symptoms. “I wish I had known that postpartum depression can happen to anyone because I didn’t think it could happen to me. Here I was, with my perfect little Luna and a supportive husband, yet I was truly struggling.”
