Are Older Children More Successful

November 4, 2018

There’s research for everything and now a researcher, Sandra E. Black, a professor of economics at the University of Texas at Austin, says that the oldest child is often more successful than their siblings. A disclaimer: In my family, the youngest child is the most successful so I’m already looking at this report with several side-eyes.

Can birth order seal your success-fate? According to an article published in the National Bureau of Economics Research Reporter, Black states that basically after the first child, you are too tired to give your all to those who come later. The first child benefits from all of your attention, energy and time.

This study also showed that younger children are more likely to be entrepreneurs while older siblings tend to be managers. I would think that an entrepreneur would make more money and have more opportunities for success than a manager working for a company. They also found that firstborns are more likely to have high blood pressure than their younger siblings.

The first child benefits from all of your attention, energy and time.

Albeit, this research was not done with Black families. It would be interesting to see if the results varied with Black children.

The moral to this research is, the more quality time you invest with your children, the more likely they will grow up to be successful and wealthy.

What’s your birth order success-rate in your family?
