Successful Black Parenting magazine Publisher and Founder, Janice Robinson-Celeste, interviewed the VP of Policy at the National Black Child Institute, Cemere James about the PreK-to-Prison Pipeline. The ACLU defines the prison pipeline as “the policies and practices that push our nation’s schoolchildren, especially our most at-risk children, out of classrooms and into the juvenile and criminal justice systems.”

When policies are biased against Black children such as harsher punishments for normal childhood behavior or when not understanding the culture result in suspensions, expulsions, or arrest that is the entryway into the criminal justice system. According to The Root, 99% of NYC school kids who were handcuffed in 2016 were black or Latinx.
